When You Search Yahoo!, You’re Searching Google

Okay, Yahoo! is known for its high-quality and well-organized Web directory. But when you use Yahoo!’s Web Search feature, you bypass the directory entirely and instead retrieve results supplied by a third-party search engine. That’s right. When you use the search box on Yahoo!’s home page, you’re not searching Yahoo!—you’re searching Google. For some time now, Yahoo! has supplemented its directory listings with results from a partner search engine. Early on, Yahoo! offered results from the Inktomi search engine. Today, Yahoo! uses results provided by Google.

The contract that Yahoo! has with Google is not open-ended, which means that when the current contract expires, it’s possible that Yahoo! might go with a different search index provider—such as Inktomi, which Yahoo! purchased in March of 2003, or AllTheWeb or AltaVista, which Yahoo! acquired later the same year. So it wouldn’t take a great stretch of the imagination to envision Yahoo! delivering some blend of Inktomi/AllTheWeb/AltaVista results sometime in the future, either in place of or in addition to the current Google results.

Do your own comparison. Enter a query into the Yahoo! search box, then go to Google (www.google.com) and enter the same query. The results should look familiar.

Since searching with Yahoo! is the same as searching with Google, you can use Google’s advanced search operators when you conduct a Yahoo! Web Search. These operators help you fine-tune your search by including or excluding specific words, searching for exact phrases, and narrowing your search to certain sites or domains. There’s no point in repeating those operators twice in the same book, so turn to Chapter 6 to learn more—then utilize those advanced search operators the next time you construct a query on Yahoo!.

Windows 7 Recovery Discs (32bit/64bit)

With Windows 7 released and currently making its way to shelves in time for the holiday season, we've taken this opportunity to upgrade our copy of the official Windows System Recovery Discs for compatibility with Windows 7.

If you're like most PC users, you probably got Windows 7 with a new PC or laptop. And if you're like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers. Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo; who all have one thing in common: they don't give you a real Windows 7 installation disc with your purchase. Instead, they bundle what they call a "recovery disc" (that's if you're lucky - otherwise you'll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.

It doesn't matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows 7 license - your computer manufacturer just don't want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows 7 installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.

The problem is, with Windows 7, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It's not just a way to get Windows installed, it's also the only way of recovering a borked installation. The Windows 7 DVD has a complete "recovery center" that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

Thankfully, ******oft seems to have realized this problem, and have thankfully made a recovery disc for this purpose. It contains the contents of the Windows 7 DVD's "recovery center," as we've come to refer to it. It cannot be used to install or reinstall Windows 7, and just serves as a Windows PE interface to recovering your PC. Technically, one could re-create this installation media with freely-downloadable media from ******oft (namely the ******oft WAIK kit, a multi-gigabyte download); but it's damn-decent of ******oft to make this available to Windows' users who might not be capable of creating such a thing on their own. You can make your own copy from Windows 7 Ultimate Edition, but now you have an easier alternative.

It's a 143 MiB download (165 MiB for the 64-bit version), and in the standard ISO format, ready to burned directly to a CD or DVD. Don't wait until your PC crashes to download a copy! Download and burn your recovery disc today, so that when the time comes, you'll be ready!

What it does: The Windows 7 Recovery Disc can be used to access a system recovery menu, giving you options of using System Restore, Complete PC Backup, automated system repair, and a command-line prompt for manual advanced recovery.

What it doesn't do: You cannot use the Windows 7 Recovery Disc to re-install Windows - it only fixes (not replaces!) Windows.

Why you need it: If you bought your PC from a major retailer, you didn't get this CD with your hefty purchase.

Instructions

1. Burn the .iso file to a CD using these instructions.
2. When you want to use the recovery center, put the CD in your drive and boot from it. This is usually done by pressing F8 at startup, or changing the boot drive order in the BIOS.

Summary: Hybrid approach to Photoshop, but not for everyone

This book is unique in a sense that half of the book is written in a project-oriented way. In other words, you should know to do this when you want to get this effect. Top down or objective-driven approach. Another half of the book is centered around what each function offers, what CS4 version offers, etc., in other words, bottom up. Photoshop is a big software and both approaches have merit, but there is always a limit to how far each approach can go. However, I feel there are some gaps that aren’t filled between the two presentation approaches taken in this book, and this probably frustrates readers of all levels. Nonetheless, I’ve learned a few new things by flipping this book and reading some sections of it.

The publisher likes to sell books, so they publish a new one with each release eof the product. If you have the book for CS3, there is not a whole lot new in this one. Having said that though, there are some new features, and that, along with the info from previous versions, makes this a great reference book.

A solid reference for stepping into the world of Photoshop. While I don’t have CS4 (I have CS3) it was still easy to follow along and perform the majority of the examples. Great instructions with detailed images of your task.

The internet has so much to offer, a single google search on a particular photoshop question will return you thousands of results and for the most part for free. Given this, a book needs to really stand out and this one does as a great reference and works well for those looking for "at your pace" tutorials.

Summary: Movies, good screenshots, but unremarkable

- A good amount of content (450+ pages)
- Well written

Cons
- Some of the tutorials/chapters are hard to follow, like a step or two, or an explanation of why we’re highlighting that portion of the image is missing.

Other information:
- This book like many of its kind, uses a MAC for the screen shots, but the differences between the OS X and Windows versions are not significant to negatively impact the reading if you’re using Windows.
- The book name is generic and misleading "CS4 essential skills", as well as quotes used "The one Photoshop CS4 book to own". The book is strictly about photography, and photoshop does a lot more than that. Just wanted to make it clear that it’s strictly about editing photos. (I already knew this, but if you picked up the book on a store it’s hard to tell)

Overall the book is good, provides a nice overview of the new features of CS4, but is overall fairly unremarkable.

This release jumps to version 2, due to the UAC elevation that I've kicked around for months. Vista and 7 users can now install from any account and from any UAC level. You will only be asked once to allow ob_install.exe to run; the rest of the script executes perfectly even with UAC on full blast. Post SP2 updates were removed; they took to damn long to install and I wanted to keep the package at ~700 MB. The classic menu not registered bug is also fixed now, sorry to everyone that d/led 1.7.
